An oldie but a goodie goes to its new home!
I’m pleased to report my “Green Tangle”, which was one of my earliest ones, moved to its new home in Long Beach, CA. It’s even more pleased to be there! Thank you Karen, I hope you enjoy it for years to come!
“Mojave” arrives at its new home…in the Mojave!
So my temporary desert studio space came to be because my friend Jason had just purchased a home out there, and then immediately went on tour with Redd Kross for three months (he’s the awesome guitar player!) and let me set up shop while he was away. I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and to thank him, I gave him this painting I created while I was there… which I titled “Mojave”, of course! So happy for it to be in its birth place!
Commission complete…and it’s a hit!
So the commission was for a Cat Tangle to give as a Christmas gift, and here it is! My patron and her recipient want to remain private, so what I can say is… she loved it! I’m really happy with how it turned out too, and thrilled it has a great home in downtown Los Angeles.

As many of you may know, I had to leave my beloved Equestrian District studio last year. It was a difficult loss. In Los Angeles it’s hard to find affordable studio space, so I tried to make due at home — but home wasn’t cutting it! An opportunity just presented itself that I can’t pass up — free temporary studio space in Yucca Valley. The Mojave Desert is one of my favorite places, so having a reason to go so often is going to be a dream! I can see Joshua Trees from my window! I’m in love!
Lost (more likely stolen) Tangles
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news “Tan Tangle” and “Blue Tangle” are officially “lost”. I brought them to the UPS store in Los Angeles (on Virgil at the intersection of Sunset and Hollywood. Yes, I’m naming names) to ship to a patron in Michigan. After a couple of weeks of them not arriving, I followed up with the UPS store and UPS HQ — which was not an easy or pleasant experience. Long story short, they had no record of my package ever even getting on a truck and leaving the store — which seems to suggest the package was taken from the store. I’m an honest, hard-working person, so I don’t want to suggest it was an employee, but… all I can say is the package was about the size and weight of a flat screen TV. They were (under) insured because I thought no way would they lose a package this size — but at least I got something. Anyway, if by chance you ever come across these paintings, PLEASE report it to me! No questions asked, but I would very much like them back.
Canopy – SOLD!
When I was in college, one of my favorite films was Naked Lunch. Michael, who acted in it, just purchased my painting, “Canopy.” He has been working passionately on environmental issues through Climate Reality Project, so this abstract painting of trees at sunset really spoke to him. Thank you Michael! I hope you love it for years to come!

Former Child Star Tangle, out in the wild!
Thanks to Art Share LA, you can see a larger than life print of my Former Child Star Tangle at the Arts District Brewing Co. in downtown Los Angeles. Sitting by it with some cold brew, look at it a while and see what pops out! I’m not sure how long it’ll be up, so catch it while you can.

Present for a Patron
Courtney asked about commissioning me to paint the pictures seen over Amèlie’s bed (in her favorite movie, Amèlie). I had to tell her I was too busy, but would love to when I free up… knowing full well I was going to paint them and give them to her as a Christmas present. She has been such a super supporter and patron for so long, it was time to give back! I think they turned out quite well!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of selling a painting! Troubled Tangle was purchased from the Bury the Lead show at Art Share LA, and moved to San Diego. I would like to thank Art Share and the collector, who was nice enough to share this photo of it in its new home. I think it looks great!

Opening Night at Gallery 1988: A Tribute to Judd Apatow
I’m a huge fan of the TV show Freaks and Geeks, so I jumped at the chance to immortalize it in a Tangle. I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this show, and it did not disappoint! This was the first art event I’ve been involved in that actually had a line — a long line — to get in. I’m thrilled to have been a part of it, and to have sold my painting… to none other than Mr. Apatow himself! A huge thanks to him, Gallery 1988, my friends who came out, and everyone else who is always so supportive of my art and activities… Does it sound like I’m accepting an award? Maybe I should skip ahead to some photos from the night!

Making Of A Tangle

Well it took much longer than anticipated, but The Secret Lives: Self-Destructive Musicians is now complete. It was with much love for these talented, tormented artists that I painted this… and yes, it has its secret too. Their legacies live on!

The Secret Lives, part 6
I’ve been working on the 6th painting of Tangles: The Secret Lives, and this is my first to feature exclusively musicians. It’s too soon to show, and I don’t want to give away its secrets, but it’s coming along quite well. I’m anticipating finishing within the next month, and then starting another. For those of you keeping tabs, I’m still deciding what to do with “the big one”…
Upcoming Shows
I have agreed to create original work for several upcoming shows at Gallery 1988 in Hollywood. They’re not for a while (so more information will be coming later), but they’ve been having a lot of fun, pop culture-themed shows, and I’m excited to be involved.
LA Marathon
It’s not art related, but I have to tell you any way: I ran the LA Marathon yesterday! It was the second for me, and this year’s weather far surpassed the monsoon-like conditions of last year. Thanks in large part to the sunny skies and mild temperatures, my friend Julie and I were able to shave off almost 20 minutes from our previous finish time. It wasn’t easy, but we kept smiling almost the whole time (with the exception of a couple hills) and enjoyed seeing so much of the city on foot, and on a beautiful day. Time to put the feet up for a few days… then it’s back to painting!
Large Canvas = Trouble
I have been battling my 60 x 60 canvas, wrangling with its stretcher bars, trying so very hard to coax it into a nice, useable canvas. It has been plagued by technical problems, but it appears my perseverance has paid of—it has finally snapped into place! Now if I could only decide what to paint on it…
The Great Painting Exchange
After our 2009 show, Icons & Tangles, Andy Carey and I decided to make paintings for each other in our signature styles. Andy compiled a list of people who are meaningful to him to be Tangled, and I requested an Icon of one of my all time favorite people to have walked the earth: Michael Jackson. It took a while to become a reality, but it happened. Here’s the result.
The Secret Lives: Third Painting Complete!
I’ve just finished the third painting of my new series, The Secret Lives. This series is made of Tangles, but these Tangles have secrets… secrets which will only be revealed at the opening (TBA). This is a sneak peak…
Canvases Stretched and Ready
I’ve completed 10 canvases — 9 @ 39 x 39″, and one @ 60 x 60″. It really was a lot of work, but in the end, I’m glad I did it. I think these paintings will have even more depth, knowing that every aspect of them was created by the artist. Now it’s time to start painting!
Orange Tangle — Sold!
Orange Tangle, the painting that everyone seemed to gravitate toward at the Icons & Tangles show, has sold. It is hanging in the residence of a Hollywood director, and appears to be taking to its new home. It seems the presence of Danny DeVito in it sealed the deal! Perhaps we’ll see it again some day at my retrospective… but until then, rest assured that it will be well taken care of and enjoyed.
Canvas Stretching Underway
With the stretcher bars complete, it’s time to put them to use! I’m stretching canvas over them, but you won’t see any staples here, only nails. That’s right, I’m going old-school, complete with rabbit glue. As an 18-year vegetarian, I was conflicted about using it; however, after trying the synthetic stuff, there was no other way. Sorry rabbits.
Making Stretcher Bars
In preparation for my new series of paintings, I’ve been hard at work building all of my canvases from scratch. I have to admit, I was hesitant to do it. Not because I couldn’t, but because I wasn’t convinced it was the best use of my time and effort. After extensive discussions with a friend, I decided it was the only way to go. Starting with a trip (or two) to the lumber yard, followed by lots of measurements, I cut down the wood into stretcher bars with my mighty mitre saw. Next comes assembly!
It’s that time again

I’m going to have screen prints and drawings available in the Holiday Salon in the L.A. arts district. Entertainment and refreshments will be there too, so a good time is practically guaranteed. Ghostbusters!
For one night only, my large Black and White Tangle will be hanging in the Old Firehouse in downtown Los Angeles. Now this isn’t just any old firehouse… it’s the old firehouse that had its moment of fame in Ghostbusters! It is a really charming place, but insists on no autographs. So come enjoy the art and ambiance, and leave your 8×10 and sharpie at home!

Mariah Carey?
I have never considered myself a Mariah Carey fan. I have nothing against her, I’m just not a fan. But when a Tangle painting artist hears the siren song of “Mariah Carey themed art wanted” it’s just irresistible. So I pulled out the paints, and created a glorious 40 x 40″ Mariah Carey Tangle, to be featured at a private MC themed party! The undoubtedly splendid event took place June 21 at MJ Higgins Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. If you couldn’t hit the high notes, you weren’t getting in… and that includes this artist!

You say you’re a huuuuuge Mariah Carey fan, and you just have to have this painting? My deepest condolences, but it is no more… it was painted over! Can you guess which Tangle covers it?
Rock Rose Show
So this show is called “Bustin’ Out.” While I’m not crazy about that title, it’s at Rock Rose Gallery. I like rocks, and I like roses… so why not? The concept of the event is for all of the artists to create something totally different from their usual. What will I have? Think 3D, but other than that, you’re going to have to come see for yourself!

I’m a friend of Mt. Washington
I had a Tangle in the Friends of Mt. Washington Elementary School Silent Auction extravaganza. It sold and raised money for a great cause: art programs and teaching assistants for this public school. I’m a big believer in public schools and art education, so I was very happy to help out. It was a fun night too, thanks guys! (below: the featured Tangle; patron leaving with Tangle in hand.)
I Heart L.A.
It took me a while to accept it, but this Michigander really does love L.A., and I’ll have a painting in the show I Heart L.A. to prove it. It’s at Monkey House in Silverlake, and the opening reception is January 24, 2008, 5 to 9 pm.
